Crack Growth > Stress corrosion cracking

Picture V.40: Crack propagation due to corrosion. Values for illustration purpose only.

A crack can grow due to the combination of stress and chemical attack. This happens not only under cyclic loading, but also under static loading for $K_I < K_{IC}$ in particular environments such as salt water, hydrogen, chlorides, etc. and mainly for metals. In this context, for a given static SIF, one can deduce the propagation speed of the crack from experimental data, see Picture V.40.
